The College of Medicine Holds a Lecture ‘Community-based Strategies to Address Weight in Children and Youth’

The College of Medicine in Kuwait University held a lecture on community strategies to address excess weight in children and youth. The lecture was given by Dr. Gerhild Ullmann from the University of Memphis in the United States of America.
Dr. Gerhild Ullmann was invited for her research about the consequences of aging and physical and mental activity. She published several research papers on healthy lifestyles and chronic disease management programs.
In her lecture, Dr. Ullmann talked about health and excess weight problems in children, and about basic concepts on healthy habits. She discussed the results of several research papers conducted in the USA and other countries.
Dr. Ullmann explained that a sedentary lifestyle, an unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, illnesses, some medications and genetics are all factors that may contribute to weight gain among children. She added that we can limit the spread of obesity in children through a healthy diet, portion control, calorie counting, prioritizing fruits and vegetables, exercising for one hour a day and avoiding soft drinks and sugars.
